Biography of Mel Tormé
At the age of three, he was singing in public; at four, he was on the radio; at nine, he was acting professionally, and at 15, he published his first composition -- an instrumental. After playing drums and singing in Chico Marx's band (1942-1943), he formed a vocal ensemble, The Mel-Tones, for which he wrote exceptional arrangements; it performed with Artie Shaw's band. From the late 40s on, Torm‚ has pursued a career as solo singer with consistent success, also acting in films and on television and writing songs ("The Christmas Song" and "Born To Be Blue" have become standards). He has published a novel, a reminiscence of Judy Garland, an autobiography, and a biography of his friend and frequent coworker, Buddy Rich. Torm‚ is clearly a man of exceptional gifts; his voice has remained an astonishingly consistent and accurate instrument, and his upper range -- always a special feature of his style -- remains intact in his seventh decade of performing. He has few peers as an interpreter of the great American songbooks. ~ Dan Morgenstern
