Biography of Houston Person

This solid, big-toned tenor saxophonist has made many good sessions in the soul-jazz, blues, and ballads vein through the 70s, 80s, and 90s. He often works with vocalist Etta Jones. He doesn't play in relentless, experimental, or innovative fashion but offers nice, pleasing solos and interpretations. An 80s duet album with bassist Ron Carter opened some eyes to his ability to stretch out and go beyond the norm; he's still best in uptempo situations with funk, blues, or soul-jazz arrangements and foundation. ~ Ron Wynn
